IO Breakout

A pogo-pin based IO expansion interface for prototyping and peripheral integration

Overview

The IO Breakout is an expansion device designed to expose the Comet’s internal IO in a flexible way.

It features 40 pogo pins, enabling seamless connection to external peripherals such as GPIO modules, keyboards and other custom peripherals.

Hardware Specifications

  • Primary Interface: 40-pin pogo connector
  • Expansion Type: GPIO breakout and debug interface
  • Header Pitch: 2.54 mm female headers (breadboard-compatible)
  • USB-to-UART IC: CP2102
  • Intended Use:
    • Prototyping and experimentation
    • Firmware flashing and debugging
    • External peripheral integration (keyboards, gamepads, sensors)

Architecture

The GPIO Extension adapts the raw pogo-pin interface into standard, breadboard-compatible connectors while also providing a convenient communication interface to the host system. It converts the 40 pogo pins into 2.54 mm pitch female headers, allowing easy access to all exposed signals using standard jumpers.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Rapid prototyping
  • Debugging and signal probing
  • Connecting external sensors or modules

The IO Breakout is designed to bridge the gap between compact hardware design and open-ended experimentation by exposing internal signals through pogo pins and adapting them to familiar connectors without compromising the integrity of the core system.
